Jonathan N. Nelson is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Major, VA-accredited attorney, and legal advisor for the Mesothelioma Veterans Center. He has spent more than 20 years fighting for justice and is ready to help veterans and families affected by mesothelioma get military benefits and other resources.

Major Nelson comes from a family of military veterans, with his father, uncles, brother, and sister-in-law all serving. After attending college and law school, Major Nelson became an attorney for the U.S. Marine Corps and served for 15 years.

“I appreciate that Marine lawyers are trained to lead Marines into battle, not just to serve as lawyers in uniform,” he recalls.

He was deployed overseas to Iraq and Kuwait during the Global War on Terrorism. He later taught at the Naval Justice School in Rhode Island and served as the Staff Judge Advocate for the Second Marine Division. After his service, he spent nearly a decade responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) appeals with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In his role with the Mesothelioma Veterans Center, Major Nelson helps U.S. veterans obtain VA benefits, financial compensation, and other resources to make their battle with cancer easier. He knows how mesothelioma affects veterans and their families since his wife’s grandfather, a World War II veteran, died from it.

“Companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, yet they deliberately hid the truth, choosing profits over the well-being of people,” Major Nelson says. “I feel like compensation is honestly not enough for people with mesothelioma, but at least they can secure a better financial future for their families and loved ones.”

Major Nelson is ready to walk alongside veterans with mesothelioma to get the benefits that they rightfully deserve.
