Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and is considered one of the international leaders in nearly all areas of medicine — including mesothelioma. BWH is one of the major teaching hospitals for the Harvard Medical School, as well as one of the oldest hospitals in the U.S.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Mesothelioma

Brigham and Women’s Hospital has a long legacy of excellence in the care of many different types of diseases, including mesothelioma. This is a rare disease that cannot be treated by most general surgical centers, or even most cancer centers. This facility is part of Brigham and Women’s Healthcare, the Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, and the Brigham and Woman’s Physician Organization.

More than 1,200 physicians are affiliated with the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital. There are more than 150 outpatient practices associated with the hospital, including the International Mesothelioma Program (IMP). This is a world renowned center for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma patients in the New England area, as well as patients who travel to the facility from other parts of the United States. This facility has cared for patients from more than 120 countries throughout the world.

Treatment and Specialities

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is consistently ranked among the United States’ top 10 hospitals. It is also among the top 10 specialty centers for heart disease, geriatric conditions, nephrology, gynecology, cancer, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, endocrinology and rheumatology. Patients with mesothelioma can be seen at the BWH for the surgical management of their disease, as well as to receive radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

While the roots of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital date back to 1832, the facility is actually a result of merging three of Boston’s most prestigious Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals. In 1980, Brigham and Women’s Hospital was formed through a merger of the Boston Hospital for Women, the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital and the Peter Brent Brigham Hospital. This brought together three centers of clinical excellence that currently care for thousands of patients throughout the world.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is considered one of the nation’s leaders in the improvement of health care safety and quality. They have developed some of healthcare’s best practices, including the implementation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE), which is designed to reduce the incidence of medication errors. This program originated at BWH and is now used throughout the nation as an accepted safety practice.

Clinical Trials and Research

Mesothelioma patients have the opportunity to take part in clinical trials at the BWH, which is the second greatest recipients of funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH funds only the best facilities so that research can be conducted for diseases as complex and rare as mesothelioma.

BWH is the recipient of more than $640 million USD in total research monies and is home to more than 1,000 clinical research investigators.

Through the BWH Research Institute, many important medical discoveries have been made and the institute is the origin of a large number of research articles and publications each year.

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a nationally-recognized training center for nurses, physicians and other health care professionals, with more than one thousand trainees who participate in more than 140 of the most prestigious training programs in the world. The hospital is host to students from the Harvard Medical School, who help specialists as part of their clinical rotations. This offers trainees the richest of health care opportunities so that they can go on to become physicians who will enrich the lives of thousands of patients throughout the world.

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital is affiliated with the International Mesothelioma Program, which is devoted to the research of mesothelioma specialists, as well as the care and treatment of mesothelioma patients. Mesothelioma is a rare and complex disease that cannot be treated by the average oncologist. It requires specialized care, such as the care given by mesothelioma specialists. These doctors practice out of the facility and conduct research on the disease.

While mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, not everyone exposed to the substance develops mesothelioma. Those who do develop the disease, however, aren’t diagnosed with mesothelioma for 10-40 years after being exposed to asbestos. Healthcare professionals at BWH that specialize in mesothelioma also treat other asbestos-related diseases, such as asbestosis.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital treats patients with mesothelioma through their Division of Thoracic Surgery. Surgeons at BWH have been instrumental in developing treatment protocols in mesothelioma care and designing clinical trials that all mesothelioma patients have an opportunity to participate in.  Each year, there are hundreds of mesothelioma patients who receive a diagnosis of mesothelioma and want to receive the latest in mesothelioma treatment.

As a major center for mesothelioma care, Brigham and Women’s Hospital is affiliated with consultants and other health care professionals who see mesothelioma patients all the time. They have access to the research efforts of the International Mesothelioma Program, which is the largest mesothelioma program in the world. This program caters to mesothelioma patients who want the latest treatment protocols and access to specialists who know how to care for mesothelioma.

Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is home to board certified thoracic surgeons who not only perform surgery on the more common types of lung cancer, but have sub-specialty experience and training in the management of mesothelioma. This disease is so rare that many oncologists have never seen a case, or have treated just a few of these types of patients.

The specialists at the Brigham and Young’s Hospital are experts in the most advanced procedures in the diagnosis of mesothelioma, including mediastinoscopy — a procedure that helps diagnose mesothelioma and can guide the treatment strategies used.

The surgeons who practice at the Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center are also faculty members at the Harvard Medical School where they teach aspiring doctors about mesothelioma and train them in the latest treatment protocols. Common procedures taught by the mesothelioma specialists at BWH include the minimally-invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) procedure, robot-assisted technology and the pleurectomy with decortication procedure.

Those treating patients with mesothelioma at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital understand that many mesothelioma patients do not live in the Boston area and have set up programs for transportation and housing for patients from out of town. They will then have the ability to be seen and cared for by the mesothelioma specialists at BWH without having to worry about housing or transportation.

Senior Veteran Support Team

The Mesothelioma Veterans Center was created to provide information and assistance to veterans regarding treatment, clinical trials, and VA benefits for veterans suffering from asbestos illnesses. The MVC was founded by retired veterans and veterans advocates who have helped hundreds of veterans get approved for their VA benefits after developing mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer from their asbestos exposure in the military.
